Here's the problem:

The Traditional Approach to School-Based Speech Therapy Needs to Change

5/7

And that's because...

  • Student need is too highfor SLPs to cope with, and it's continuing to rise after the pandemic
  • Students aren't getting enough practicefrom weekly group sessions alone (despite SLPs doing everything they can)
  • A national shortage of SLPsmeans some districts are even ending up in bidding wars to meet their staffing needs
  • Students stay on IEPs for yearsinstead of being remediated quickly, which puts a huge strain on district budgets

So something big needs to change in how we deliver speech therapy in schools. 💡

As certified school-based SLPs...

For 10+ Years, We've Been Refining a More Efficient Approach for Speech Therapy in Schools

headshot Co-founders of Snappy Speech®

We are Mindy Hudon, M.S, CCC/SLP and Rachelle Mauer, M.S., CCC/SLP. 👋

Back in 2010, we noticed a problem with the traditional approach to intervention for mild-to-moderate articulation students.

The problem?

👉 If we only worked with these students in groups of 3-4 for one session per week, that meant each student was only getting ~20-25 drills per sound—not the 'gold standard' of 200+ drills.

And, as SLPs, we knew two things with absolute certainty:

✅ Students need high-frequency practice in order to progress.

❌ There's no way we'd have time to see that many students daily.

Eventually we realized...

We Needed a Highly-Trained Extension of Ourselves to Deliver Drill Sessions Each Week

Otherwise, it might take us YEARS to dismiss some of these mild articulation students!

So we trained our first 'Extender' and...

✅ Students started making rapid progress.

✅ We began dismissing IEP students within months instead of years.

✅ Our caseloads dropped to manageable levels.

✅ We started seeing RTI students we didn't have time to treat before.

✅ We were able to do more work at the top of our license.

😅 We asked ourselves why we hadn't done this years ago.

Now, after years of success with this approach, we've started helping other districts implement a similar model—with amazing results!

After launching in multiple districts....

Schools Are Finding That This Model Reduces Caseloads by up to 42% in the First Year

(Yes, that's after the first year alone!)

"Teachers have seen a noticeable difference in students’ speech sound productions much quicker than in past years, while also being out of the room for shorter periods.

Several teachers have now expressed their preference for Snappy Speech®, as it gives them the two things they want: students to make progress and students not to miss class time.

Parents have also shared with us that they're very happy to get this kind of support through school-based therapy."

If this sounds like something your district needs...

We'd love to work with your SLP to implement Snappy Speech®! 👇

Introducing...

Snappy Speech®

Snappy Speech® is the evidence-based program that helps SLPs roll out a high-frequency intervention approach with the support of a trained paraprofessional or "Extender". Students get more practice each week while still being treated by a certified SLP, and caseloads start reducing fast.

We provide all the resources your SLP needs to roll this out 'in a snap'!

https://cdn.fs.teachablecdn.com/3pFGOhI0Rf2D6jJ92lbg

How does the program work?

  • Step 1 Share our website or case studies with your SLP
It's essential that your SLP is on board with the Snappy Speech® approach before your district joins! Send them our info and we'd be more than happy to answer any questions they have before starting.
  • Step 2 Contact us to arrange access
We'll discuss how many 'seats' you need, and each member of staff will be given their own log-in to access our private training area.
  • Step 3 Support your SLP with setting aside 3× half-days
Your SLP needs dedicated time to work through the program effectively (rather than trying to squeeze it into a maxed-out schedule!).
  • Step 4 Select (or hire) your Extender
Follow our guidance on how to find a suitable Extender—whether you're looking at existing staff allocations or hiring a new paraprofessional.
  • Step 5 Enroll your Extender in our school
Your new Extender will log in to our training area, and we'll teach them everything they need to know to deliver effective drill sessions under the supervision of an SLP.
  • Step 6 Your SLP will follow our step-by-step plan
By the end of the program, your SLP and Extender will have everything in place ready to run their first Snappy Speech® sessions!

By the end of the program, your SLP will have...

  • DONE Sent a letter to teachers introducing Snappy Speech®.
  • DONE Created a list of IEP students who will benefit from these sessions.
  • DONE Notified parents about how Snappy Speech® will assist their kids.
  • DONE Conducted intital screenings of IEP students and any RTI referrals.
  • DONE Set up their binder with student info and required documents.
  • DONE Prepared intervention materials (either low-tech tools or an app).
  • DONE Secured furniture for their location set-up.
  • DONE Developed schedules for both the SLP and the Extender.
  • DONE Notified teachers of approximate student schedules.
Everybody wins!

Loved by Administrators & SLPs

Snappy Speech® delivers better outcomes for students, reduces SLP overwhelm, minimizes time away from the classroom AND provides essential services, as school districts struggle to hire SLPs.

Superintendent, Using Snappy Speech®
"As Superintendent for over 12 years, this is one of the best programs that has had a positive impact on speech service delivery.

With 24% of our students on IEPs, we desperately needed therapists. Snappy Speech® allows us to meet student needs cost-effectively—in spite of the SLP hiring crisis."

School SLP, Using Snappy Speech®
"Not only are kids being seen, but they're making progress!

We sampled 21 students on Snappy Speech® and were able to dismiss 9 students by the end of the school year (that's a 42% decrease in services provided). And the remaining students progressed anywhere from 4-11 levels on their target speech sounds!"

testimonial School SLP, Using Snappy Speech®
"With students exiting from their IEPs so quickly, it's been very positive for families.

Parents' main concerns are usually missed service time, but the Snappy Speech® model means that even if I get pulled into a meeting and a session gets canceled, the child is still being seen multiple times that week. So we haven't had any pushback at all!"

What's included?

Peek Inside the Training Area

Snappy Speech® includes comprehensive video training and resources for SLPs and Extenders. The SLP gets everything they need to roll out this model with ease, while the Extender gets the training they need to deliver effective drill sessions.

Lesson #1 Background

The first lesson explains the difference between traditional methods and our approach to high-frequency intervention. This gives your SLP and their Extender a solid understanding of why we do things in this way and the research that backs it up.

  1. The research behind the model — Learn about the efficacy of this approach.
  2. Where our research began — How we fine-tuned our model in the real world.
  3. What “top of the license” means — And where Extenders fit into the picture.

Why does this matter? So that your SLP can trust in an approach that's backed by extensive research, proven to get results in real schools, and approved by ASHA.

Lesson #2 The Role of the Extender

In this lesson, we'll cover what an Extender is and the difference between SLPAs and paraprofessionals. Fully understanding these roles means everyone can work towards the best outcomes for each child—without stepping on each other's toes.

  1. Who can be an Extender – Understand the role of SLPAs and paraprofessionals.
  2. What Extenders do – Learn about the tasks they should (and shouldn't) take on.
  3. Job description for Extenders – The core responsibilities and key hiring criteria.

Why does this matter? The success of this model relies heavily on selecting the right Extender, training them well, and making sure they understand their role.

Lesson #3 Confidentiality

In this lesson, your Extender will learn why it's essential to keep student information private, and how to do so effectively. We'll cover common situations where Extenders might reveal sensitive information inadvertently, with guidance on how to handle them.

  1. Legal and ethical obligations — What needs to be kept confidential (and why).
  2. Examples of breaches — How sensitive info can be revealed inadvertently.
  3. Scripts for common scenarios — Best practices for handling sensitive questions.

Why does this matter? Unless they're prepared for certain conversations in advance, Extenders may disclose sensitive information without even realizing.

Lesson #4 The Role of the SLP

This lesson explains the extensive training SLPs undergo and the scope of their work in a school system. Extenders will learn why the SLP always works as the clinical supervisor, and how their role helps to extend the work of the SLP.

  1. SLP as the supervisor — Recognizing the SLP's expertise and credentials.
  2. Scope of practice — What the SLP is responsible for and how they do it.
  3. Collaboration with Extenders — How Extenders can increase capacity for SLPs.

Why does this matter? Clearly understanding the role of the SLP means the Extender knows not to overstep professional boundaries. This is essential for staying within compliance and making sure the model runs smoothly for the SLP.

Lesson #5 Articulation 101

This lesson gives the Extender a basic understanding of articulation, which is key to helping with speech sound practice. They'll learn the essentials needed to deliver Extender drill sessions effectively.

  1. Basics of articulation — What articulation is and when speech sounds develop.
  2. Speech sound disorders — What causes them and their prevalence in schools.
  3. How Extenders can help — The role of Extenders in practicing speech sounds.

Why does this matter? Your SLP and your Extender need a basic level of shared knowledge in order to communicate effectively about the work.

Lesson #6 How Sounds Are Made

This lesson provides a basic overview of how we produce speech sounds. We'll cover the core tenets of oral mechanism so that the Extender has a foundational understanding of speech science.

  1. Manner — How air flows to make sound.
  2. Placement — Where we make sounds in our mouth.
  3. Voicing — The difference between voiced and voiceless sounds.

Why does this matter? This is essential knowledge for working with kids on speech articulation. Without it, Extenders won't be able to deliver productive sessions to support the students effectively.

Lesson #7 Optimize Speech Sound Practice

After understanding the basics of speech science, Extenders will now learn how to deliver positive speech practice. This lesson teaches them how to work with the child for the best possible communication outcomes.

  1. Positive vs. negative practice — Defining negative practice and how to avoid it.
  2. General vs. specific praise — How to give constructive, effective feedback.
  3. Motor learning principles — Three keys for optimizing speech sound practice.

Why does this matter? Extenders must know how to avoid negative practice so they don't enforce incorrect behaviors. Otherwise their involvement will only cause setbacks and frustration for the child.

Lesson #8 Speech Sound Cuing

This lesson covers the most important part of the Extender's work. They'll learn about cuing and how to use a range of different cues under the direction of their SLP.

  1. The power of cues — What cues are and why they matter so much.
  2. Types of speech sound cues — Examples of visual, verbal, and tactile cues.
  3. Cuing demonstration — How to cue different sounds with different cue types.

Why does this matter? If your Extender doesn't know how to modify a cue or when to ask for help with an ineffective one, their practice may halt the child's progress.

Lesson #9 Why Snappy Speech® Works

In this lesson, we dive a little deeper into the many different causes of speech sound disorders and the research into different treatment approaches. This will help your SLP and their Extender understand why our model works and how it compares with others.

  1. Types of treatment — Articulation- vs phonological-based approaches.
  2. Clinical judgment — How SLPs mix and match approaches for each case.
  3. Efficacy of Snappy Speech® — Why this model leads to better outcomes.

Why does this matter? As clinicians, it's essential that SLPs take an evidence-based approach to their work. We want SLPs to understand exactly why this model works so that they can implement it with total confidence.

Lesson #10 The Screening Process

This lesson gives your SLP a complete process to identify and screen kids who'd benefit from Snappy Speech®. We'll show them every step from the initial teacher request and parent contact, through to completing the screening itself.

  1. IEPs, 504s and RTIs — Understanding key terms and legal documents.
  2. Screening requests — How teachers can make requests (with a template).
  3. Low- & high-tech options — Detailed walkthroughs for the screening itself.
  4. Qualifying criteria — How to identify if a child is a good fit for Snappy Speech®.
  5. Progress monitoring — What it looks like to monitor a child throughout the year.

Why is this important? Snappy Speech® isn't right for every child, so you need an efficient way to identify those who'll benefit from this approach.

Lesson #11 How to Schedule Efficiently

This lesson gives your SLP all of the guidance, templates, and examples they need to run an efficient Snappy Speech® schedule. They'll learn how to schedule their Extender's sessions and the changes required for their own time.

  1. Informing parents — Downloadable parent notification and permission forms.
  2. Scheduling IEP students — Needs-based scheduling and how to put this in IEPs.
  3. Daily scheduling calculator — Calculate time requirements based on caseloads.
  4. SLP & Extender schedules — How to work around classroom/school schedules.
  5. Considering RTI students — How to include RTI students into the mix.

Why is this important? School schedules are complex at the best of times. Your SLP needs an efficient way to manage their new schedule so it doesn't add overwhelm.

Lesson #12 Locations for Snappy Speech®

In this lesson, we offer guidance on finding the best location in a school to conduct Snappy Speech®. We'll cover the pros and cons of various locations, the materials needed, and walk through how to arrange each session for optimal results.

  1. Suggested locations — Where Snappy Speech® sessions can be conducted.
  2. What's needed? — Making sure the location has the required equipment.
  3. Pros and cons — The advantages and disadvantages of certain locations.
  4. School geography — How to choose the best location for time efficiency.
  5. Setting up your session — Optimal arrangement for minimizing distractions.

Why is this important? If each child needs to be brought back to the SLP's office for every session, the time requirements can easily double. Efficiency is a priority!

Lesson #13 Intervention Materials

In this lesson, we provide all of the materials your SLP needs to run Snappy Speech® articulation drill sessions. We'll also talk through the advantages and disadvantages of using low-tech vs high-tech tools, and offer detailed guides on setting up either option.

  1. Snappy Speech® binder — Printable copy of students' target sounds and an overview of their progress, to help Extenders plan and monitor sessions.
  2. Low-tech session guide — How to use readily-available cards and articulation books to deliver Snappy Speech® with familiar resources.
  3. High-tech session guide (recommended) — How to use the 'Little Bee Hive' app to deliver sessions, collect data, and monitor progress all in one place.

Why is this important? We want to give your SLP as many time-saving shortcuts as possible! We've done all of the planning legwork so they can get started quickly.

Lesson #14 Overcoming Obstacles

There are several obstacles that can get in the way of delivering productive Snappy Speech® sessions. In this lesson, we'll talk about the two main types of obstacles, how to prevent them, and what to do if they come up.

  1. Environmental obstacles — How to deal with noise and other disruptions.
  2. Student obstacles — Handling issues with focus, defiance, chattiness and more.
  3. Minimising disruption — Practical tips for keeping sessions on track.

Why is this important? With these short drill sessions, every minute of practice matters. Even small disruptions can reduce the number of drills by half!

Lesson #15 Let's Do This!

In the last lesson, we'll review the key steps involved with starting Snappy Speech®. So that by this point in the program, your SLP has...

  • Sent a letter to teachers introducing Snappy Speech®.
  • Created a list of IEP students that will benefit from Snappy Speech®.
  • Notified parents about how Snappy Speech® will assist their kids.
  • Conducted intitial screenings of IEP students and any new RTI referrals.
  • Set up a binder with student information and required documents.
  • Prepared intervention materials (using either low-tech tools or an app).
  • Secured furniture for the location set-up.
  • Developed schedules for both the SLP and the Extender.
  • Notified teachers of approximate student schedules.

What's next? Your SLP and Extender are ready to run their first Snappy Speech® sessions!

10 Questions School Districts Asked Before Joining Snappy Speech®

Q1 How much time will this take to implement?

Your SLP will need 3x half-days to...

  1. Go through the training
  2. Train their Extender with our video course
  3. Set up the necessary paperwork and schedules

We've included as many pre-made resources as possible to make this new approach easy for your SLP to implement 'in a snap'!

"Wonderful course! Loaded with research-based information and very useful and practical for treatment of speech sound disorders. Looking forward to being part of this movement. Thank you, Mindy and Rachelle!"

Q2 How much does this cost?

Compared to the cost of having 20 extra kids on your caseload for 5-10 years, this program will save your district far more than the upfront cost. Our pricing is dependent on the number of 'seats' you need, so contact us here for a quote.

"For our district, the cost really hasn't been significant. We're seeing a reduction in student need and caseloads, and while we did need to hire a full-time paraprofessional to be assigned to our speech therapist, she's now only spending half of her time on Snappy Speech® delivery because so many students are coming off their IEPs. There's definitely cost-saving at the end of the rainbow!"

Q3 Where will we find the extra staffing?

In some cases, it can make sense to hire a full-time paraprofessional (and we even include a template job posting in the course!). But first, we'd suggest looking at your current paraprofessional assignments to see if you can re-allocate 2-3 hours per day for Snappy Speech®.

"As a Superintendent, we had issues hiring speech therapists for many years. With 24% of our students on IEPs, we desperately needed therapists and would almost end up in bidding wars with other districts. Snappy Speech® allows us to meet student needs cost-effectively—in spite of the SLP hiring crisis."

Q4 Why do we need to change our approach to speech therapy?

How quickly are speech articulation students being dismissed from SLP caseloads in your district, on average?

If you're anything like our pilot schools, it can take up to five years.

Well, what if we told you that one of our pilot schools was able to dismiss 42% of articulation students within just one year? Snappy Speech® reduces caseloads fast.

"We sampled 21 students on Snappy Speech® and were able to dismiss 9 kids by the end of the school year (that's a 42% decrease in services provided). And the remaining students progressed anywhere from 4-11 levels on their target speech sounds! Not only are kids being seen, but they're making progress."

Q5 Will the Extender be perceived as an SLP or SLPA?

Absolutely not! We're very clear on this throughout the program.

The paraprofessional is trained to deliver one task only—speech sound production practice. This doesn't make them an SLP or an SLPA, but it does mean they can extend the work of the SLP after thorough training and with supervision. The SLP is always the clinical lead.

"We were able to communicate to families and teachers that the paraprofessional is there for practice, while the speech therapist is there to treat the child and set the child's treatment plan. We didn't have any pushback at all."

Q6 I haven't seen anything like this before. Is it allowed?

Yes. ASHA has published guidance on using "extenders" to maximize the time that SLPs spend delivering services they are uniquely qualified to provide.

This approach to school-based speech therapy isn't commonplace (yet), but we're here to change that!

"SLPs should strive to “practice at the top of the license” and to educate individuals in self-management strategies. Across the globe, there are not enough audiologists and SLPs to meet the needs of each individual living with communication disorders. [...] Therefore, when we focus attention on the clinical activities that require our unique knowledge, skills and attitudes, we facilitate functional outcomes in a cost-effective manner." (ASHA, 2018)

Q7 Will students still get the speech therapy time they need?

Students are always seen by the SLP. The Extender simply delivers supplementary sessions alongside the child's main treatment with the SLP, under their supervision.

"The number one thing parents are concerned about is missed service time. The Snappy Speech® model means that even if I get pulled into a meeting and a session gets canceled, the child is still being seen multiple times that week."

Q8 How do parents respond to Snappy Speech®?

Parents just want their kids to get the best treatment. Once they understand that each child gets more time practicing sounds while still seeing their SLP each week, parents respond positively.

The headline news is that instead of getting 25 trials per week, their child gets 200 trials and a faster exit from their IEP.

"When a parent hears their child needs speech services, it can sometimes be upsetting. So when a simple articulation issue can be remediated and that child can exit from their IEP quickly, it's been very positive for families. Parents are also happy that their kid isn't spending large chunks of time outside of the classroom!"

Q9 How do SLPs feel about this approach?

Once they've understood that their paraprofessional will be a highly-trained extension of themselves who can deliver extra drill sessions (rather than a replacement for any part of their core clinical work), SLPs have been eager to jump in and try Snappy Speech® for themselves.

Our advice is to share our Case Study Pack with them so they can see some of the results from our pilot schools, and if they have any questions, we'd love for them to get in touch.

"My district assigned me somebody just for a couple of hours here and there, and it helped so much. Students started getting off IEPs and we could finally service RTI kids that we just weren't getting to see before!"

Q10 I'm interested in joining. What are the next steps?

We'd love to have you in the program! Contact us here and we'll answer any questions you have, and we'll provide a quote for your district.
